White Zombie - Movie Review

"With these Zombie Eyes he renders her powerless, With this Zombie grip he makes her perform his every desire!!!" White Zombie was released in 1932, and starred Bela Lugosi, who was a huge box office hit from 1931 with Dracula, Lugosi plays the evil Murder Legendre, who can control people with a little white powder, a hand clench, and a very nasty glare.

Young lovers, Neil and Madeline, are invited to marry on Beaumont's Haitian plantation so Beaumont can attempt to steal Madeline for himself. With the aid of devious mill owner Legendre, Beaumont administers a potion to Madeline turning her into a zombie he can control. The now passionless Madeline isn't what Beaumont was looking for and he begs to have her returned to her former state. Instead, Legendre turns Beaumont into a zombie too. Jilted lover Neil, convinced Madeline is still alive and well, seeks her out to save her. Bela Lugosi is at his sinister best as Legendre.

White Zombie was one of the first blockbuster horror films of its day and is believed to be the first film to deal with zombies. It was independently-produced and not a product of a major studio like Universal, which made most of the best-known early horror films. The elaborate sets were rented from Universal, and the striking painted background images belie its independent status and help make it more comparable to a studio film than many subsequent independent horror films.

White Zombie is among the most-renowned horror films of the early sound era. But unfortunaly the sound is not great on this copy but it is still highly watchable film.
