Sherlock Holmes And The Secret Weapon - Movie Review

Based on the short story "Dancing Men" from volume "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Victorian Sleuth, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his trusty assistant Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce), are transplanted to WWII europe and help protect a scientist and his invention from the Nazis.

The secret weapon is a new bombsight which could hasten the outcome of World War II, and both the Allies and the Nazis are in a desperate race to secure it for themselves. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are assigned to find the kidnapped scientist who developed the secret weapon, only to be foiled by Holmes' nemesis, the evil Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill) who has now aligned himself with the Nazis.

was enterprising enough to distribute the bombsights components among several other patriotic scientists. Racing against the clock, Holmes and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) try to stem the murders of Tobel's colleagues and prevent Moriarty from getting his hands on the precious secret weapon. The now-famous climax finds Holmes playing for time by allowing Moriarty to drain all the blood from his body, drop by drop ("The needle to the last, eh Holmes?" gloats the villain).

The second of Universal's "modernized" Sherlock Holmes films is also the first of the films to introduce Dennis Hoey as Scotland Yard detective Inspector Lestrade.
