Yu Ming is Ainm Dom - Movie Review

Bored with his life in China, a shop worker decides to move to Ireland and becomes perfectly fluent in Irish before his trip. The film follows his adventures in trying to be understood in Dublin, where most of the population has little or no grasp of their own language.

Yu Ming works in a Chinese shop and hates his job. His dream is to come to Ireland and he spends his free time studying everything Irish, including the language. One day his dream comes true and he finally lands in Dublin airport. To his disappointment, nobody seems to understand his Irish and he lives a lonely life in Dublin. Until one day, An Gaeltacht is revealed to him and puts back a smile on his face.

It's a sad fact that in modern Ireland, the Irish language is a virtual non-entity, kept alive by the government, with it's status as the nation's official language, and in pockets of the west of Ireland. This situation is satirized brilliantly in this film.

he short film, shot on DVCam, was funded by TG4 and Filmbase through the Lasair scheme.
