Burlesque On Carmen - Movie Review |
|
Charlie Chaplins Burlesque on Carmen was Chaplins 13th film for Essanay Films. It was released in 1915 and then later recut into a different version in 1916. Charlie Chaplin played Dain Hosiery and Edna Purviance played Carmen. Carmen was very popular at this time and one of the reasons Chaplin decided to create his own comedy version on the opera. The film is a parody of two contemporary films based on Bizets opera, by Cecil B. De Mille (starring opera star Geraldine Farrar) and Raoul Walsh (starring vamp Theda Bara).

Burlesque On Carmen Trivia - Did You Know?Burlesque on Carmen was intended by Charlie Chaplin to be a two-reel film, but to his annoyance additional material, shot by Leo White and featuring Ben Turpin, was added for its release after Chaplin left Essanay. After his departure, the studio included two more reels which Chaplin had shot, featuring the screw-eyed Ben Turpin ogling a Rubenesque woman and some slapstick dueling scenes. Chaplin tried to sue the studio, but he lost the case, and so the film survives with all four reels. Related FilmsIn the Park | A Jitney Elopement | Easy Street | His New Job | Chaplin - Police | |
