Bloody Pit Of Horror - Movie Review

Bloody Pit of Horror (Original Italian Title: Il Boia Scarlatto) is an Italian gothic horror movie from 1965 about an Italian castle owner who is possessed by an evil spirit of its terriable past when a group of models come to use his property for a special photo shoot. The models soon find themselves victims of his special brand of torture.

You know you're in for a special treat when a movie starts with a quote by the Marquis De Sade. "My vengeance needs blood!" (Insert maniacal laugh here) Part Italian horror film, part muscleman movie, Bloody Pit of Horror (1965) is a uniquely strange cinematic hybrid.

Ex-Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay (Jane Mansfield's husband) plays the thick, musclebound host for the evil spirit of the notorious "Crimson Executioner," a sadistic Italian Baron in whose former castle Hargitay and a collection of sexy models are staging a Gothic-themed photo shoot. Before long, the sweaty brute is hauling the poor lasses into the dungeon to have at them with a wide assortment of torture devices. The film's ad slicks proudly proclaim this Euro-cheapie as being "Based on the works of the Marquis de Sade." Although this statement is pretty unlikely, it's still hard to refute: Who's to say a movie depicting the torture of numerous scantily-clad ladies isn't something the Marquis wouldn't heartily endorse?

Bloody Pit of Horror is sometimes kinky, at times weird but always hilarious. An homage to bodybuilding and masochism that shouldn't be missed. it isn't one of the better Italian horror films, but it's certainly one of the strangest and for that reason it has acquired a cult following. Bloody Pit of Horror may not be a particularly profound work of cinema, but its situations are so outlandish that you'll frequently find your jaw hanging open. This is '60s Italian gothic horror at its kinkiest.

Bloody Pit Of Horror Trivia - Did You Know?

Jayne Mansfield and her husband, Hungarian bodybuilder Miklos "Mickey" Hargitay were in Italy to shoot PRIMITIVE LOVE when Mickey took time off to shoot Bloody Pit of Horror. Hargitay made one other worthwhile foray into the Eurotrash genre, called "The Reincarnation of Isabel."
