My Favourite Brunette - Movie Review

MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE is a spoof of the hardboiled detective genre. Bob Hope plays a baby photographer who gets mixed up with gangsters after he pretends to be a private detective. Dorothy Lamour costars as the mysterious femme fatale, and horror legends Peter Lorre and Lon Chaney turn in hilariously villainous performances.

Hope plays Ronnie Jackson, a baby photographer, who dreams of being a private eye like his business neighbour, Sam McCloud. Mistaken for McCloud by the beautiful Carlotta Montay (Lamour), Jackson embarks on a nervous mission to locate her missing uncle, Baron Montay (Frank Puglia). The baron, it seems, has been kidnapped by a bunch of spies (who count a deliciously sinister Peter Lorre and a not-quite-all-there Lon Chaney amongst there number) who are seeking the whereabouts of a stash of uranium. The story itself is by-the-numbers stuff and strictly predictable, but the comedy is frequently of the highest laugh-out-loud calibre. Stand-out scenes include Lorre's attempts to place crucial evidence in Hope's path as the hopeless would-be detective searches a room, and Hope's foiled attempt to trick Chaney (who appears to be having a whale of a time) into helping him to escape from a sanatorium in which he is being held by the spies. There are a couple of amusing cameos – one predictable, one less so – and a nice brisk pace that suits the relatively short running time. If you're not a Hope fan this isn't going to convert you, but if you're not averse to his one-size-fits-all brand of comedy then you're sure to be entertained.

The 1940's was a very prolific period for Bob Hope as he made 21 movies during that decade including some of his very best (the "Road" films of course with Crosby and Lamour, "The Paleface" with Jane Russell, and "My Favorite Blonde" with Madeleine Carroll). However, "Brunette" rates as high, if not higher, than any of these as it had a very funny script and a wonderful supporting cast including a funny cameo appearance from Bing Crosby and Alan Ladd!

My Favourite Brunette Trivia - Did You Know?

Bing Crosby's cameo in My Favorite Brunette - Bob Hope and Bing Crosby had an arraingement to do cameos in each other's movies, however, Bing had already done a cameo in Bob's last movie, so it wasn't Bing's turn. Bob wanted Bing to do this cameo so badly that bob offered to pay bing $5000. which Bing donated to charity. Bing Crosby walked on set, skipped makeup, ( already made up from another movie he was shooting on the lot), stopped at wardrobe, (which consisted of donning a prison guard shirt), and did his bit in one take, leaving the soundstage in just 5 minutes, making a Hollywood record for the most money per minute payed to an actor.
