Embryo - Movie Review |
|
Rock Hudson, post his Doris Day heyday, plays a ... well, a scientist whose sanity is a little bit open to question (isn't it high time scientists complained about the way Hollywood has always stereotyped them?). He starts off giving the gift of life to a puppy whose mother he's just run over and swiftly moves on to a Mengele-like experiement on a human foetus. It doesn't tak a rocket scientist to predict the tearful consequences. Embryo is one of those odd 1970s schlock horror flicks which comes trailing its own seriousness - the opening credits tell us the science behind the script is real. But the whole thing is really just a great old laugh as you watch one Hollywood cliche after another being rolled out by the script-writers. Despite all that, Embryo should raise a few questions in some people's heads, questions relating to stem-cell research, abortion, cloning and the like. Plus a bit of infantacide and paedophilia if you take a wide - very, very wide - reading of the text.
