Reefer Madness - Movie Review |
|
Considered the archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. Reefer Madness has become a cult classic because of its dated (1937) outlook on marijuana use and is the height of camp entertainment. Framed as a "documentary," the film is narrated by a high school principal imparting his wisdom and experiences with the demon weed. The bulk of the film focuses on almost slapstick scenes of high school kids smoking pot and quickly going insane, playing "evil" jazz music, being committed, and going on a murder spree. Meant to be an important and affecting cautionary tale, this dated black-and-white film's true value is in its many entertaining moments of unintended hilarity.

Reefer Madness Trivia - Did You Know? The origins of this film have been the subject of controversy for years. Some say it was produced by a church group, while others insist that it was made for the army. Dwain Esper unsuccessfully sued a distribution company in the 1960s over the film rights, claiming that he had produced the film for the US army, and that he was the legal copyright owner. However, he was unable to support his claims, and lost the case. Related FilmsSex Madness | Quicksand | Kansas City Confidential | The Green Glove | He Walked By Night | |
