Mr Wong In Chinatown - Movie Review

Mr. Wong in Chinatown is a 1939 mystery film directed by William Nigh and starring Boris Karloff. Third of the Mr. Wong series finds James Lee Wong investigating the murder of a wealthy Chinese woman. She had been helping to fund the purchase of airplanes to equip China in its 1930s struggle with Japan.

A pretty Chinese woman, seeking help from San Francisco detective James Lee Wong, is killed by a poisoned dart in his front hall, having time only to scrawl "Captain J" on a sheet of paper. She proves to be Princess Lin Hwa, on a secret military mission for Chinese forces fighting the Japanese invasion. Mr. Wong finds two captains with the intial J in the case, neither being quite what he seems; there's fog on the waterfront and someone still has that poison-dart gun.

Is she really involved with the funding of airplanes to equip China in its 1930's struggle with Japan? Her death is the first in a series of bizarre murders. This is an absorbing thriller with the dimwitted Inspector Street and his reporter girlfriend adding to the confusion for Mr. Wong.

The trail leads to a steamer in the San Francisco harbor, whose captain, Jalme (William Royle), is highly suspicious. Also among the would-be murderers are a phony airplane manufacturer (Peter George Lynn) and a local banker (Huntly Gordon). Although kidnapped by Jalme, Mr. Wong manages to unmask the real culprit.

Mr Wong In Chinatown Trivia - Did You Know?

Between 1938 and 1940, Monogram Pictures produced a series of detective films that stand among the best that emerged from an outfit known more for the quantity of films it released and distributed than the quality of its product. Monogram went onto make six "Mr. Wong" features, each with a running-time of just shy of 70 minutes. Karloff played the character in five of the six movies in the series- "Mr. Wong, Detective" (1938) through "The Fatal Hour" (1940).
