The Last Man On Earth - Movie Review

The Last Man on Earth is the original 1964 Italian science fiction horror movie based upon the novel 'I am Legend'  by Richard Matheson, directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, and staring Vincent Price. Remade in 1971 as 'Omega Man' with Charlton Heaston and in 2007 'I Am Legend' with Will Smith.

Vincent Price plays Robert Morgan a scientist who sought a cure for a plague sweeping the Earth. but three years later, he now he lives alone, apparently the only survivor, and the disease has changed the rest of the population into nocturnal vampires, who hide from daylight, hate mirrors and are warded off by Garlic.

Each day he gathers his weapons, seeks them out and kills them with a stake through the heart - burning their corpses, and each night he barricades himself into his home, playing his collection jazz records at full volume and listens as the undead pound on his doors and windows.

Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Morgan's wife and daughter were infected and instead of cremating them, as instructed by the authorities, he buries the corpses but then the true horror of the plague is revealed to him when his wife returns to the house and tries to kill him.

Morgan finds that he is immune to the disease and his only companion is a lone dog he befriends. One day while on his daily vampire hunt, in the distance he spots a woman. At first she is frightened by Morgan and flees from him. Eventually Morgan manages to convince her to come to his house, but Morgan is still very suspicious that the woman, Ruth, is infected.

As he rushes to find a cure the infected close in on him. The Last Man on Earth did not enjoy much success when it was originally released, but the movie has since become a classic of the early science fiction horror genre.
