The Lucky Texan - Movie Review |
|
The third film in a series of Lone Star westerns made by John Wayne between 1933-35 for producer Paul Malvern, The Lucky Texan features Wayne as Jerry Mason, a young college graduate who, along with old family friend Jake Benson (George Hayes), who locate a secret gold field and the efforts of baddies Lloyd Whitlock and Yakima Canutt to cheat them out of it. As is usually the case with these B Westerns the attraction is both the young John Wayne before he fully develops his heroic cowboy persona and the stunt work of the legendary Yakima Canutt (the best one is where Mason leaps for a bad guy, misses, falls into a ravine, and ends up catching the guy at the other end). Yakima Canutt doubled both Wayne, Hayes, and several of the villains. In fact, Canutt got to virtually chase himself in a gasoline-powered handcar in the film's exciting finale.
